Translating Ornament is a book that encapsulates an iterative method of formal generation I developed during my thesis year. It explores the translation of ornament and its connotative qualities between the mediums of type and pattern. The first section of the book demonstrates the grid as a tool for translating ornament from pattern to typography. The second section proposes methods of creating pattern from typographic ornament.

Each chapter uses found material as an origin to an elaborative graphic process. Functioning as both instructional and reflective, the book comments on methods of graphic translation and the role of a designer in repurposing and celebrating ornament. The book’s binding allows each spread to open to 34”x11”, revealing process details, research considerations, and full-spread visual indulgence.
